What learning style suits you?

Knowing your best style of learning is essential to excel in life.

Everyone is a learner by birth. We learn something knowingly or unknowingly every day. Purposeful learning builds our career, reduces suffering, achieves excellence, gives satisfaction, realizes self-esteem, makes our life worth and useful for others. Unless we learn efficiently and in the right manner, right things, it is very difficult to disseminate or transfer knowledge to the next generation through teaching, writing articles, discharging our duties on decision-making bodies, and in many more ways. Therefore, in brief, what I want to say is that we must know the method of learning best. In what way, I can learn in the most effective manner. Researchers have classified broadly three types of learning styles i.e. auditory learners, visual learners, and kinesthetic/tactical learners.

I did an online test to determine my dominant way of learning style and came to know that I am mostly a visual learner.

You can refer book entitled, " 1o best teaching practices  " authored by Donna Walker Tilestone to know more about different learning styles given in chapter 2. This book can be accessed by clicking here.

I am sure, you also wish to know your best way of learning method. Once we know the best method of learning style, we can extensively use it to achieve our goal in a better way. We can also work on other styles based on given prescriptions to improve.

Never cite an article which you did not read

 Dear Friends,

I have attended one webinar titled “ Conquering the intricacies of citation and references ” delivered by Mr. Yateendra Joshi (yateendra.joshi@gmail.com), organized by Wiley on 24th August 2021.

Below are few opinions and learning outcomes out of this webinar.

For a researcher, citation and referencing are essential components that we mostly do not take seriously. We consider the task of citation and referencing as an extra and unimportant task; however, it is as important as the reporting research outcomes mentioned in the manuscript. The citation is the pointer of previously reported work, of which detail is mentioned at the end of the manuscript (sometime after abstract and before introduction also to emphasize the importance of reference items considered while preparing article).  The citation of other’s research outcomes in our articles shows that we have done enough homework, say literature survey, are aware of state-of-art work, knowing the problem well and research gap.  It is also a method of giving due credits to the researchers who have/are contributed/contributing to the research we are doing.  The citation and reference give a means of verifying the assertions claimed by authors.

Most importantly, proper citation and referencing also avoid falling into the category of plagiarism. Never cite an article that we have never come across, never read, and understood rightly. Interestingly, one article  (Van der Geer J, Hanraads J A J, and Lupton R A. 2000. The art of writing a scientific article. Journal of Science Communications 163(2): 51–59 ) which does not exist was cited by more than 400 times ( as per google scholar it was cited by about 1223 times) which shows that those authors never verified or tried to consult the article.   Citation of the source of the first-hand and original information is a good practice. We should strictly follow the guidelines provided by the respective journal regarding the citation and referencing styles besides other suggestions for authors.

Readers of my blog can access the slides of the talk given by Mr.  Yateendra Joshi by clicking here.

Thank you for giving your valuable time to read my blog. Your comments, suggestions shall be highly appreciated.

Research Impact of July 2021 as per Elsevier and Weekly RG Stats

 Dear friends,

I feel happy to share that the research outcomes of our researchers from the Lightwave Communication System (LWCS) Laboratory, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, NEHU, Shillong are attracting the attention of the global research community.  Dr. Dhiman Kakati's (who did Ph.D. under my supervision in the year 2020)  research article entitled, "  A Full-duplex optical fiber/wireless coherent communication system with digital signal processing at the receiver" has already received 13 citations from different researchers.
Another Ph.D. scholar Mr. Himanshu R. Das (who has submitted his Ph.D. thesis) research work entitled, " Performance improvement of VO2 and ITO based plasmonic electro-absorption modulators at 1550 nm application wavelength " with six citations has also drawn the appreciable attention of readers.  In the month of July, 68 people have socially interacted with this article.

Elsevier and Research Gate have recognized the impact of the above research as:

Based on a few more research work done by LWCS Laboratory members, my popularity has achieved top position in the Department of ECE with the highest RG point of 19.09.  I am thankful to all my research scholars.

Teacher Education-Paradigm Shift: Challenges in NEP 2020 and Global Perspective

24th & 25th July 2021, 10:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M. (IST)

The flyer of two-day international workshop in which Dr. Subhash Arya took part in a panel discussion

While taking part in a panel discussion on 25 July, Dr. Subhash Arya said the four years multidisciplinary BEd programme for teacher education shall face many critical challenges such as the design of curriculum which shall fulfill the need of skills and competencies in a 21st-century teacher.  The arrangement of various resources, infrastructures to build a teacher education programme as per NEP-2020 needs overhauling of the present system.  He alerted that perhaps in a given present scenario of education in India, it shall be like daydreaming.  In a four-year BEd programme, experts from various disciplines suppose to come together to frame and run the curriculum who might be facing their own discipline-related issues.
The snapshot of a certificate was presented to me after the workshop for due recognition.

Design of CMOS switch for 2-bit DAC

I tried to design CMOS based inverter circuit as a first step to realize a 2 -bit Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) today.  The open-source software e-Sim has been used to design the pre-layout.

Following tools have been planed to realize 2-bit DAC

1. eSim

2. Sky130 pdk

3. ngspice

4. Magic

The eSim simulation software can be download by clicking here.

Though I tried to get the response curve using ngspice software, however, could not get results because of some errors.

Certified Peer Reviewer Course from Elsevier Researcher Academy

I used to review the original manuscripts on the invitation of editors from different SCI-indexed journals. However, I thought now it is time to be a more professional and sound reviewer of manuscripts that were supposed to be evaluated by me. In this regard, I found a course on the "Certified Peer Reviewer course" offered by the Researcher Academy Elsevier and completed it successfully.  Happy to share its completion certificate with you all. I encourage researchers to pursue this short course for their career and professional development as better peer reviewers.

Certified Peer Reviewer Course

What you will learn

  • Understanding of the peer review process
  • Advice on writing a helpful peer review report

Wiley Webinar on Number representation on 17th August 2021 from 3 pm to 5 pm.

A webinar was organized  "Presenting numbers and quantities with precision and style" by Wiley on 17th August, 2021 from 3 pm to 5 pm.

Counting and measuring set science apart from other pursuits. Yet, techniques of communicating quantitative information are often ignored in programmes on writing skills. Although 2017 marks sixty years of metrication in India, the precise conventions of the SI system (Système International d’Unités) are often violated by writers of research papers. The session on numbers offers answers to these and similar questions.

1) How should multi-digit numbers be printed (123,000 or 123 000 or 1,23,000)?
2) Which is the recommended symbol for the litre, L or l?
3) When should data be rounded off drastically and when not at all?
