Farewell Address for Shri Biswajit Das Gupta

Delivered by Prof. Subhash C. Arya, Head, Department of ECE, NEHU, Shillong

Date: 3rd July 2025

Good morning, everyone!
Respected Prof. L. J. Singh, Prof. Rupaban Subedar, Dr. S. K. Dutta, Dr. Raj Kishur Mudoi,
Dr. Juwesh Binong, Dr. Jaydeep Swarnkar, Dr. Pankaj Sarkar, Sh. Asif Ahmed, Dr. Nipanka
Bora, Members from our departmental technical staff, Mrs. Avanna Elizabeth, Mr. Beneficial
Rani, Mr. Enbokthiaw Syngwan, Mr. Wankitbok Lynrah, Ms. Aurlia, Mrs. Syrpailin
Nongsiej Kong and last but not the least and centre of attraction of today’s event, Sh.
Bishwajit Das Gupta ji and his better half, Mrs. Guptaji.
Last evening, before leaving the department at around 6.45 pm, Dr. Raj Kishor Mudoi ji
suggested to me, “kal acche se bhashad dena hai” on the occasion of farewell of Guptaji.
Knowing well that I am not a good orator, and since most of us have already heard me on
30th June in the VC’s conference room, I shall still try to meet your expectations. Well, as we
ECE Departmental members gather to bid farewell to our beloved member, Sh. B. D. Guptai,
firstly, I am heartfully thankful to all departmental colleagues and fraternity for arranging this
event to express our acknowledgement, gratitude, love, and affection towards Sh. B. D.
Gupta ji and his better half in a very humble and zealous manner. My special thanks go to Dr.
Raj Kishor, Dr. Juwesh Binong and Dr. Jaydeep for taking all the pain and trouble to arrange
today’s farewell.
I shall begin to offer my acknowledgement to Sh. B. D. Guptaji as follows:
“ BishuDa ! aapne Diya ECE ko jeevan! Since he was attached to the department, probably
since its inception,
“BishuDa! aapne Diya ECE ko jeeva,
ECE Department aapko Koya Dega?
Apni AAG Tej rakhne ko
Naam Tumhra Lega, Naam Tumahra Lega!
Friends, let us give a big round of applause to honour him!
Gupta ji joined NEHU way back on January 6, 1986, and stepped into his role as Senior
Technical Assistant on October 22, 1997. That is a whopping 39 years, 5 months, and 25 days
of pouring his heart into this university! Since 2006, he has been a cornerstone of our ECE
Department, helping build it from the ground up. Those are not just numbers; they are years
packed with hard work, quiet dedication, and moments that made a real difference.

My first interaction as such started with the LICs Laboratory course in the year 2010. I found
him very knowledgeable, technically sound and an expert in class management. His ability
to guide students and troubleshoot complex technical issues was simply remarkable. He has
been conducting various laboratories, which all of you know, namely, LICS, EDC and EMI.
He used to extensively support in the conduct of mid and end term exams as an alert and
sincere invigilator throughout his career in the department of ECE, as and when it was
required. He has been supporting B.Tech, M.Tech, and Ph.D admissions and guiding final-
year students with hardware-based projects. Gupta ji was always ready to lend his expertise
and time.
What truly makes him special is not just his knowledge, but his approach—his spirit. He is a
team player through and through: ever helpful, always solution-oriented. His discipline,
respect for structure, and genuine care for the well-being of faculty, staff, and students helped
create a positive and collaborative environment in our labs.
In the leadership of Sh. Guptaji, the NEHU was cricket champion consecutively 13 times,
which shows his commitment and bringing laurels to the University, to the stakeholders of
the University. It is an uphill task to maintain such a high standard. One time win may be a
result of very hard work and dedication, but sustaining those high results and a champion
position consecutively 13 times is really incredible. That shows he is a fine cricketer and
athlete, and he brought that same energy, grace, and optimism to his professional life. His
"sporting spirit" was evident not only on the field but also in the way he worked with
fairness, enthusiasm, and resilience.
As he now steps into retirement, his legacy will remain imprinted in our department—in the
systems he helped build, in the students he mentored, and in the culture of collaboration he
fostered.
Gupta ji, on behalf of the entire Department of ECE and the School of Technology, I extend
my heartfelt thanks for your years of service, humility, and quiet strength. You have been a
pillar of this department, and your absence will certainly be felt.
On this occasion, Please allow me express following Hindi Poem:

🌐 Meaning (English):
What I desired, I received — flowers bloomed, dreams fulfilled, even love came into my
arms.
Yet, strangely, it all began to feel like a burden.
Why has this dream-come-true life become so heavy?
Nitya
🌐 Meaning (English):
The mind is restless, chasing happiness at every turn. Yet indulgence eventually brings pain.
Why do my dreams shatter? Even your love's sweet echoes no longer soothe me.

🌐 Meaning (English):
Desire comes disguised as divinity, sweet and alluring.
Yet I feel deceived.
I fear the night (symbolizing end/death), and even sacred rituals bring no peace.
Why has life become a burden, despite everything?
Chaal
🌐 Meaning (English):
You gave me all the dreams, and even fulfilled them.
Yet, I forgot you — why?
The truth stands before me, yet I tremble to face it.
Even divinity now feels like a weight.
Why has this life turned into a burden?

(Summary):
As you enter this well-deserved chapter of life, I hope you find time to enjoy the things you
love—whether it’s a cricket match, some travel, or simply peaceful rest. This department is
always open to welcome you. In your entire career in the department of ECE, if any mistake,
or misbehave, misconduct or anything undesirable happened knowingly or unknowingly with
you, we seek your apology, please forgive us.
Thank you for everything—and may your new journey be filled with joy, good health, and
continued purpose.
Thank you, and best wishes to all.
With warm regards,

Farewell Address for Shri Biswajit Das Gupta Delivered by Prof. Subhash C. Arya on 30th June 2025

Farewell Address for Shri Biswajit Das Gupta

Delivered by Prof. Subhash C. Arya,

Head, Department of ECE, NEHU, Shillong

Date: 30th June 2025

Good afternoon, everyone!
Respected Vice-Chancellor In-charge Prof. S. Umdor, Registrar In-charge Prof. S. K. Dixit,
Dean of the School of Physical Sciences Prof. A. K. Chandra, dear colleagues, staff members,
and friends,
Today, we have gathered to bid farewell to six distinguished members of the NEHU family—
each of whom has devoted decades of their lives to this university. Their journey reminds me
of a profound teaching by Gautam Buddha. He once said in Pali, the language of his time,
“Vaya-dhamma sankhara, appamādena sampādetha,” which means: “All conditioned things
are subject to decay; therefore, strive on with diligence.” In essence, the Buddha reminded us
that everything—our bodies, relationships, possessions, and even our thoughts—is
temporary. Hence, we must not waste our time. Instead, we must remain mindful, alert, and
committed to meaningful work.
On this reflective and heartfelt occasion, we are here to honor:
 Prof. Tushar Shubhra Basu Baul from the Department of Chemistry, who served for
about 41 years;
 Shri Jose Cherian, Executive Engineer, with around 37 years of service;
 Shri Biswajit Das Gupta, Senior Technical Assistant from the ECE Department, with
an incredible 39 years, 5 months, and 25 days of service;
 Shri Kopin Corneliou D. Sangma, UDC in the Examination Department, who served
for about 39 years;
 Shri Sanjoy Bhattacharya, Laboratory Assistant in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics,
with 34 years of service; and
 Shri Udaya Nath Naik, MTS from NEHU Tura Campus, who served for about 31
years.
Each of them has contributed immensely to the growth and spirit of NEHU. Among them, I
would like to speak more personally about someone very dear to us in the Department of
Electronics and Communication Engineering—Shri Biswajit Das Gupta, fondly known as
Gupta ji, or Bishu Da by some colleagues.
Gupta ji’s association with NEHU spans nearly four decades—39 years, 5 months, and 25
days, to be precise. Since 2006, he has been with our department, becoming an integral part
of its foundation and progress. These were not just years spent on paper—they were years
filled with dedication, quiet diligence, and impactful contributions.
I still remember my early days at NEHU in 2010, when I was teaching Linear Integrated
Circuits. The lab sessions ran smoothly thanks to Gupta ji’s calm presence, technical
brilliance, and deep sense of responsibility. His ability to guide students and troubleshoot
complex technical issues was simply remarkable. And it didn’t stop there. From assisting with laboratory exams to supporting the B.Tech
Lateral Entry and M.Tech admissions, and guiding final-year students with hardware-based
projects—Gupta ji was always ready to lend his expertise and time.
Let’s also not forget—Gupta ji is a sportsperson at heart! A fine cricketer and athlete, he
brought that same energy, grace, and optimism to his professional life. His "sporting spirit"
was evident not only on the field but also in the way he worked—with fairness, enthusiasm,
and resilience.
As he now steps into retirement, his legacy will remain etched in our department—in the
systems he helped build, in the students he mentored, and in the culture of collaboration he
fostered.
Gupta ji, on behalf of the entire Department of ECE and the School of Technology, I extend
my heartfelt thanks for your years of service, humility, and quiet strength. You have been a
pillar of this department, and your absence will certainly be felt.
As you enter this well-deserved chapter of life, I hope you find time to enjoy the things you
love—whether it’s a cricket match, some travel, or simply peaceful rest. Whatever it may be,
you’ve earned it. And please remember: this department, this university, will always be your
home.
Let us now all join in a big round of applause for Shri Biswajit Das Gupta and all our
esteemed retirees. Thank you for everything—and may your new journey be filled with joy,
good health, and continued purpose.
Thank you, and best wishes to all.
With warm regards,

Inaugural Address on the day (28.06.2025) of Ideathon event organized by Electrophonix and sponsored by Amantya, with a focus on 5G Technology and its applications in healthcare, agriculture, and beyond:

Inaugural Speech by Prof. Subhash C. Arya, HoD (ECE)

Good morning everyone,

It gives me immense pleasure to address you all today on the occasion of this Ideathon—an exciting platform where ideas, innovation, and intellect come together.

At the outset, I would like to congratulate the Electrophonix student forum for organizing this event and extend our sincere thanks to Amantya for supporting this initiative. Such collaborations between academia and industry are the need of the hour, especially in rapidly evolving technological landscapes like 5G.

We are living in a time where technology is not just about connectivity—it's about transformation. And 5G is poised to be the backbone of this transformation. With its ultra-low latency, massive device connectivity, and high data speeds, 5G is opening up frontiers that were only imagined before.

Let’s take a moment to reflect on what this means in real terms:

  • In healthcare, 5G enables remote surgeries, real-time diagnostics, and connected ambulances, bringing critical care to rural and underserved regions.

  • In agriculture, 5G empowers smart farming, precision irrigation, and disease monitoring of crops and livestock—making farming more data-driven and sustainable.

  • In other areas—from smart cities to autonomous transport, from disaster management to immersive learning—5G is enabling what was once science fiction to become science fact.

Today, as you all pitch your ideas, remember that innovation is not just about creating something new—it's about solving real problems in impactful ways. Whether you’re developing solutions for remote medical support, AI-enabled crop monitoring, or something entirely out of the box, know that your ideas have the potential to shape a better, more connected future.

This Ideathon is more than just a competition. It’s a spark. And I hope this spark lights the fire of curiosity and creativity within each one of you. Let your ideas be bold, let them be disruptive, and most importantly—let them be rooted in purpose.

To all participants—I wish you the very best. May your innovations not only win accolades today but evolve into real-world solutions tomorrow.

Thank you once again to Electrophonix and Amantya for making this possible.

Let the ideation begin!
