Speech by Prof. Subhash C. Arya , Head of the Department of ECE "Art from E-Waste" Competition – 14th June 2025

 Good morning, dear students!

I am Prof. Subhash C. Arya, Head of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, and it is a great privilege to address you all today at the "Art from E-Waste" Competition. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the ElectroPhoenix team for organizing this remarkable event, and I warmly welcome all the participants from various departmentsInformation Technology, Biomedical Engineering, Energy Engineering, and, of course, Electronics and Communication Engineering. Your enthusiasm for creativity and environmental consciousness is truly inspiring, and I am eager to witness the wonderful creations you will present today. As we gather to celebrate the innovative reuse of electronic waste, I would like to share an inspiring story titled What Happened to the Shawl, written by Arvind Gupta, a distinguished Indian toymaker known for crafting educational toys from discarded materials. In this story, a monk approached Lord Buddha and requested a new Cheevar, which is a shawl traditionally worn by monks. Lord Buddha, in his wisdom, did not immediately grant the request. Instead, he inquired, "What happened to your old shawl?" The monk replied, "It became worn, so I transformed it into a bed sheet." Lord Buddha then asked, "And what happened to the bed sheet?" The monk explained, "When the bed sheet became tattered, I made it into a mat. And when the mat could no longer be used, I unraveled its threads to create a wick for an oil lamp." Lord Buddha, pleased with the monks resourcefulness, smiled and granted him a new shawl, recognising that the monk had utilized the old one in numerous ways, almost to its fullest potential, nearly 100 percentbefore seeking a replacement. This story carries a profound lesson for us. In todays world, where electronic waste poses a significant challenge, we must embrace a similar spirit of resourcefulness. The circuit boards, wires, and gadgets you are working with today are not mere waste they are opportunities to create something new, meaningful, and beautiful. By transforming electronic waste into art, you are not only showcasing your creativity but also contributing to a sustainable future. Let us draw inspiration from the monk and strive to use our resources thoughtfully, ensuring that nothing is wasted unnecessarily. I would now like to share a second message, one that I believe is of utmost importance building a strong and virtuous character. You are all on a journey to become skilled engineers, developing expertise and solving complex problems, which is truly commendable. However, I firmly believe that cultivating a noble character is even more essential. Lord Buddha prescribed five precepts to guide humanity toward a life of integrity and harmony: refraining from harming others, speaking the truth, respecting others in all interactions, abstaining from taking what does 1 not belong to us, and avoiding intoxicants that cloud the mind. These principles compassion, honesty, respect, and mindfulness timeless and universal. As future engineers, you will encounter situations that test your values. You may face moments where taking a shortcut seems tempting, or where compromising on ethics appears convenient. I urge you to remain steadfast in upholding these precepts. Be truthful in your work, treat others with kindness, and act with fairness. Your character will not only shape your career but also define the legacy you leave behind. Let us aspire to be not only skilled engineers but also individuals of integrity, contributing to a better and more compassionate world. Before I conclude, I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the ElectroPhoenix team and all the participants. To the students of Electronics and Communication Engineering who have worked diligently to organize this event, your dedication, creativity, and commitment to sustainability are truly admirable. You have created a platform that fosters innovation and unites students from various departments in a shared mission. To all the participants, your willingness to explore new ideas, work with electronic waste, and create art that promotes environmental awareness is inspiring. Regardless of the competitions outcome, you are all winners in my eyes for participating in this meaningful initiative. In closing, let us remember that today is not solely about competitionit is about collaboration, learning, and growth. Let us continue to innovate, uphold strong values, and work toward a future where we live in harmony with our planet. I wish you all the very best for the competition, and I hope this day becomes a memorable and impactful experience for each one of you. Thank you, and let the competition begin!
