Abstract
In an invited talk on the occasion of the International Day of Light (IDL)-2024, firstly, I shall introduce the IDL's background, the reason for choosing 16th May as the International Day of Light, and review past themes of celebrating these events. I will further spell out the goals of celebrating the International Day of Light in line with the 17 SDGs of UNO. After that, I shall briefly explain the applications of light and light-related technologies in our lives and, finally, the impact of Silicon Photonics technology as a supporting infrastructure to the exponentially growing use of AI/ML that leverages LLMs.

Brief Biodata of
Prof. Subhash C. Arya
Subhash C. Arya is a Professor
and Head of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE)
at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, India. He has successfully supervised three Ph.D. in
(i): Plasmonic materials based Silicon-Optical Modulators, (ii): Advanced
Modulation Formats and Multiplexing Techniques, and (iii):
Space-Division-Multiplexing (SDM) based MC-EDFA. Dr. Arya completed one DST-SERB-funded
project as a Principal Investigator on “Silicon-based Optical Modulators for
high-speed Optical Communication Systems” under the Young-Scientists Scheme of
Govt. of India(GoI). He is the
Nodal-Officer in NEHU, Shillong, for the Visvesvaraya Ph.D. scheme Phase-II of
the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY), Government of
India. Dr. Arya developed two
post-graduate courses, Silicon Photonics and Photonic Integrated Circuits, for
M.Tech. (ECE) students in the Department of ECE, NEHU, Shillong, in light of
the New Education Policy (NEP-2020) of GoI.
He developed a Lightwave Communication System (LWCS) research laboratory
in the ECE department, NEHU, Shillong.
He received an ISM-JRF research fellowship while pursuing a Ph.D. in
Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier at IIT(ISM), Dhanbad (erstwhile ISM), India,
during 2004-2007. Before Joining NEHU,
Shillong as an Associate Professor in 2010, Dr. Arya acquired three years of
full-time teaching experience at ISM Dhanbad.
His Research Interests include Silicon Photonics, EDFA, Advanced
Modulation Formats and Multiplexing Techniques, and Optical Fiber
Communication. Modeling, Designing,
Fabrication, and Data Analysis of Photonics Devices and Circuits on SoI for
PICs. He has over 90 research
publications, mostly in journals and reputed conferences. He is a fellow member of the Optical Society
of India.
